Modeling and Simulation (M&S)
Since our founding, SPA has been developing and implementing tools for analysis of complex systems. The following are samples of SPA M&S services and currently employed models:
M&S Services
2004 - 2007 – M&S and analysis support to aid government client determine the best Return on Investment for air ASW sensors based on sensor performance and cost.
2003 - 2007 – M&S and analysis support to the P-8A program throughout the Component Advanced Development (CAD) and System Design and Development (SDD) phases to quantify capability improvements of the P-8A integrated weapon system.
Supported M&S planning efforts in Navy Theater Ballistic Missile Defense (TBMD) and for PEO(TSC).
Developed the Navy TBMD M&S War Room to integrate M&S efforts across the TBMD programs.
Leads the development of the Theater Wide M&S Plans.
Represented the PEO on the Theater Missile Defense (TMD) Wargame Panel that coordinated Navy participation in the first joint TMD wargame.
Conducted comparative analysis of the Operational Requirements/Key Performance Parameters for Navy Theater Wide, PAC-3, and THAAD TBMD programs.
Models
The General Campaign Analysis Model (GCAM), which comprises a set
of user-friendly tools that enable analysts to
design, build, and employ problem-specific joint
campaign effectiveness models to support timely
and focused decisions. GCAM is currently being
used to develop a number of military campaign
analyses for various DoD customers and was approved for inclusion in Prong I of
the Joint Analytic Model Improvement Program
(JAMIP) Near-Term Suite of Models.
- Force Level Effectiveness Analysis Tool(FLEAT) is a three-model family of Matlab-based, deterministic simulations. FLEAT is used to evaluate systems and netted force requirements as well as examine operational concepts (CONOPS) in theater and global mid-course and terminal ballistic missile defense plus fleet anti-ship missile defense/anti-air warfare. FLEAT is capable of supporting analysis in sea-based and Joint ground-based Theater Air and Missile Defense (TAMD).
THUNDER and Synthetic Theater Operations Research Model (STORM) THUNDER is a simulation of campaign-level military operations developed by the Air Force Studies and Analyses Agency (AFSAA) which is now HQ USAF Studies & Analyses, Assessments and Lessons Learned (HQ USAF/A9). STORM is sponsored by HQ USAF/A9 as an intended replacement for THUNDER to analyze the effectiveness of air and space power in a campaign-level, multi-service operational context. SPA has analysts on staff trained to use both THUNDER and STORM, and supports ongoing efforts to expand STORM’s capabilities.
- Commanders Analysis and Planning Simulation (CAPS). SPA is an authorized user of CAPS, which is a service-supported simulation by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). It portrays air defense and ballistic missile defense by Joint ground and sea forces across an array of global and regional scenarios.
The Graphical Modeling System (GMS), which gives a user the ability to
visualize a system, its components, and the
relationships between and among them, by
facilitating creation, navigation, and management
of an object database. Nodes and links can
contain financial data, timeline information, and
underlying documents, files, or other objects as
defined by the user. GMS is currently being used
to develop models to map scientific and emerging
technology research products into ACAT1
(Acquisition Category One) programs.
- The Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) Force Level Survivability and Effectiveness Model, which is used to assess alternative weapon system options and make force structure trade-offs.
- Extended Air Defense Simulation (EADSIM). SPA is an authorized user of EADSIM, which is an analytical model of air and missile warfare used for scenarios ranging from few-on-few to many-on-many.
