Systems Engineering and Technical Trade-offs
One of SPA's fortes since our founding in 1972 has been conducting technical trade-off analysis grounded in sound systems engineering principles. Some examples follow:
- 2006 / 2007 – Conducted the Vertical Unmanned Aircraft System (VUAS) Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) to provide SECNAV and USMC a range of enhancing attributes of a system to replace the RQ-2 Pioneer. The AoA evaluates effectiveness; cost and cost-effectiveness of potential Alternatives that meet USMC ISR, target acquisition and communications relay requirements across the range of EMW operations.
Strategic missile and weapon system characteristics definition.
- Analyses to support selection of strategic (nuclear) warheads for Trident II (D5).
- Navy strategic system vulnerability and effectiveness versus anti-ballistic missile (ABM)/anti-tactical ballistic missile (ATBM) systems.
- Strategic defense and U.S. Navy anti-satellite (ASAT) concept definition studies.
- Development of Navy TBMD Performance Verification Plan.
- Tactical missile effectiveness modeling.
- Technical assessments and recommendations for insertion of new technology into information and electronic warfare programs.
- Technical, operational, and programmatic risk assessments.
- Numerous mission and campaign-level appraisals of candidate sensor and weapon systems payoffs such as land attack missile variants, SAM systems, and radar upgrades for air and surface warfare.
- 2006 / 2007 – Conducted the Vertical Unmanned Aircraft System (VUAS) Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) to provide SECNAV and USMC a range of enhancing attributes of a system to replace the RQ-2 Pioneer.
